My Lost Paradise.

Balakliya. My lost paradise. Its light will forever glow in my heart, my mind, and my inner space. I realised the importance of what I gained there only once I stopped going to the countryside every summer. I can still feel that joy and warmth. I have been doing a lot of contemplation lately. Sometimes I wonder if this remarkable place really existed. Or is it perhaps my imagination playing tricks on me? Since February 2022 my heart has tirelessly sought shelter there from the whirlwind of the terrible reality.
Childhood.
Until I was about 14, I counted my age in summers. In hot, long summers. And also in jars of raspberry jam (without those tiny little seeds), sacks of blue-eyed potatoes, and buckets of green duckweed. I remembered each summer very clearly. I remembered what it was like: fruitful or rainy, blazing hot or just perfect. Summer was never cold. My summer schedule was intense and monotonous at the same time. I even pondered that I would never grow up. My sister and I wrote letters to our parents in Kyiv. We always looked forward to seeing them, even if we did not miss them.
Maria.
Grandma is our angel in heaven. She introduced me to the philosophy of death ‘the Ukrainian way.’ It was Grandma who helped me realise that “no one lives forever”. And that you should save your best clothes “for your own death” and know for sure “where you want to be buried.”
She took death seriously but never showed any fear of it. Even as a little girl, it was clear to me that death was part of a human life. Grandmother’s fate was tremendously difficult, but she slept soundly. She lived until she was 90 years old. And she often said, “I only wish there would be no war, my dear ones.” Only now have I truly realised the meaning of her words. I love you, Grandma.
Adolescence.
Sometime after I turned 13, our summer life in the country took on new, bright hues. It also accelerated rapidly. Romance, escapades, friendship, betrayals – more than enough for just one summer. Under the scorching midday sun, we got sunburned on our noses on the river beach. Every evening, we looked forward to going to the club and its pool table with its worn cloth, warm draft beer, instant noodles that we ate uncooked, guys on motorcycles, and genuine friendship.
My paradise appears to me more and more often in dreams. How I wish I could get it back. To do so, I only have to remember the ingredients of this recipe. Here they are: childhood, summer, freedom, trust, native soil, fragrant homemade buns, and the feeling of being here and now. No thoughts of tomorrow or of yesterday.
Thank you, my paradise. I miss you.
