This is the second in my series of ‘timed print releases’, available for one month only, then marked as sold out.
The response to the first of these in January was wonderful and those sales have gone directly towards the funding of my 3 new projects that I will tell you more about in an upcoming newsletter, but one of these is the 2nd book in our trilogy about Ukraine, the follow up to the small ‘paradise’ of Balakliya in ‘The Land is Yellow, the Sky is Blue’.
“In the winter of 2021, in February, a year before the full scale russian invasion, whilst staying at our house just outside of Kyiv, the temperature would drop. On some days to minus 27. On many of these cold days we would walk through the fields close to our home, on the outskirts of the capital, knee deep in the snow, towards the frozen river, with one of the village dogs, Dana. She lived elsewhere but each day she would slowly wander into our garden and sit by our front steps, waiting for food. She would eat and we would go for a walk together.
Just over a year later, the streets in the villages would be filled with the sounds of russian tanks, family and friends would be forced to flee or take up arms, and just over 25km away, in another village on the edge of the city, in Bucha, people were being murdered in their hundreds.
We miss Dana. I miss feeding her with the bones we would buy from Silpo (the supermarket) and the walks we would go on to the river, through the forest, along the village road, in winter on foot, in summer often on bicycles.
On this particular winters day, with Dana racing ahead, a slight flutter in the branches above me and my eye and camera were guided to the grey sky above and these two beautiful birds, circling up above our heads, chasing each other through the skies. Today, if I looked up at those same skies, what would I see?”
