October photobook fairs and a new book...maybe.

Objects as memory.

I’ve recently started to photograph some small objects as a memory. Borne out of 3 months away from making work as I renovated my home with my wife Anna, the act of making these very simple images is rekindling memories of loved ones or past events. This allows (me in this case) to think about both current and past events in a clearer way than before. It is the act that is important, more than the outcome. I’m lucky as a photographer, I think, to have this outlet.

After my father passed away a few years ago, amongst the bits and pieces from the house of my parents was this simple box that he used for screws, nails and other bits and pieces. It had been on a shelf in the garage forever, from I think the very early 80’s. Now it’s in the shed in my new family home that I have made with Anna, still filled with the same things. I enjoy these physical connections of a memory past.

As we speak with more friends abroad, who are soon to be on active duty in Ukraine, one as a photographer with the army, these memories and associated objects gain more importance than before.

Upcoming photobook fairs.

This month I will be showing and selling my books at the 10th Annual Photobook Fair at Impressions Gallery with The Photobook Club Collective and then at BOP 2024 on my own table in the MPF Foundation space on October 19th and 20th in Bristol. If you are coming along to either please do come and say hello and have a chat. Whilst always busy there is always time for a friendly face, a conversation and a coffee. You will be able to see all my books in person amongst the large number of other photographers and publishers showing their work.

A new book in process.

I'm at the first stages of putting a small new book together - possibly. I will know after part 3 below.
The set of images in the photo above are the edit prints from my previous book.

The stages for me on this type of book are:
1. The idea for the book - obviousely :) - have it.
2. On screen edit - 1000 to 150 images - done.
3. 6x4 inch work prints of these 150 to edit and sequence - a stack like those in the photograph here where those rubber bands play a very important role - I’ve just ordered these so once I have these prints early next week I can begin the long editing and sequencing process where the book starts to come together, or not!

Thank you for reading and hopefully I will see some of you at the various upcoming book fairs and in the meantime, thank you as ever for following and supporting me in my creative practice.
