06 / July book production update and new work.

Writing from a hot, humid and stormy Ukraine, I wanted to update you all on my latest books progress and new work in the pipeline.

‘A Wounded Landscape - bearing witness to the Holocaust’ is getting closer to print production now. All the images, maps, story text, captions, foreword and acknowledgement text (including the 528 names from the Kickstarter campaign) are now on page and being given the final checks by the books copy editor, Eleanor O’Kane. Once this process is complete, together with designer Wayne Ford we will complete the final design touches. All the page and cover materials have been chosen (combining Swiss and Italian paper manufacturers) and in just over 4 weeks we are due to go on press as the book goes to print at Taylor Brothers in Bristol, with 1500 copies of the 765 page book being made.
I do all the book fulfillment (packaging and shipping) myself so during that period I can organise all the book packaging materials and start writing the over 600 thank you postcards for the pre-orders. As I hope you can understand, a book like this takes time to go through the multiple stages involved and I must thank you all for your patience during this production process. I began making this work over 2500 days ago so it is a body of work that has dominated my life over these last 6 years.

New work

I have 2 new pieces of work in the pipeline also. The first is a story based documentary project in Ukraine I am currently working on alongside my wife. We took out first steps into this work last Winter and hope to push it forwards this month in a small village in central Ukraine. Like much of my work the goal here is to produce a book next year.

Also in late October I will travel to Italy for 3 weeks to work with an Italian architect and researcher for the first phase of another new project. I will then return to the area in February next year to continue this work. Exhibitions in Italy of this new work are already organised for late next year and a book is also my goal for this Italian work.

In the meantime of course my livelihood as a photographer continues through book and print sales, talks, some days as a visiting lecturer and commissioned work and so I wanted to thank you as ever for your continued support of my practice.

The mosquitos are starting to bite here now so it’s time to go back inside to continue my work and help prepare for tonights dinner, Borscht with creme fraiche and garlic.
