A post from my hotel room in Eastern Germany.

Good evening,

I’m writing to you from my hotel room in a village near the German / Czechia border. It’s the only hotel in the village and as often seems to be the case, I think I am the only guest here. There is a little bit of an ‘Overlook Hotel’* feeling to this place, but I’m sure that is just my imagination.

I’m in Germany for 10 days, the second location trip for my new work, centred around 20 locations in Europe. These first few trips are by their nature part exploratory, part making work, but it is starting to take shape which is a real positive. This new work I hope to make over the next 18 months.

As ever, my travels between locations are memorable in themselves and I enjoy continuing to share these journeys with you. I’ve driven from the UK on this occasion and have racked up close to 2000 miles already.

My recently completed book ‘The Edge of Ruin’ is now with or on the way to all the 300 of you whom either backed the work on the Kickstarter or preordered the book since and the reception to it at BOP was really wonderful, selling out all the advance copies I had with me. I must admit it feels quite special in hand and is another book I am really proud of.

I am going to be at Photofusion Winter book Fair in London on November 29th so if you would like to see the book in the flesh, you will be able to do so there, along with my other books of course. It is a slightly smaller edition to normal (750 copies rather than 1000) due to the far higher production costs than most of my other books and we are close to half sold already.

On that note the 4th edition / 5th print run of The Last Stand continues to sell, with 800 of this 1500 print run now sold, meaning we are closing in on 5000 copies in total of this book sold. This book just keeps on going so there may well come the time I have to look at a 5th edition but how that will be funded, I have no idea!

I’ve just looked over to my hotel room bed and realised my camera is sitting on there. Every time I get into a room from location, the first thing I do is take my camera out of my bag and charge batteries, copy the photographs I have made that day to my mac and back them up to my drive. And the camera sits on my bed for the evening whilst I work, send messages and talk to my family on the phone. It’s an odd habit but one I realise I do each time. I wonder if anyone else does the same?

That is all for now, bedtime here as I need to be on the road at 6am tomorrow.

Best wishes,

Marc

*For anyone that does not know, The ‘Overlook Hotel’ is from the film The Shining.
